"What does it mean that I decrease every Xth row? Is that a right side or a wrong side?"
I've been getting this question a lot lately, so I thought a little explanation would be well suited to discuss on the ol' blog today.
There are several different ways that decrease sections in a knitting pattern are worded:
1. Repeat dec row every Xth row X more times. For example, "Dec Row (RS): K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Repeat Dec row every 10th row 2 more times."
2. Repeat dec row every X rows X more times. For example, "Dec Row (RS): K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Repeat Dec row every 10 rows 2 more times.
3. Dec every X rows (without indicating the original decrease row). Example, "Dec 1 st at each end of needle every 10 rows 3 times."
The trick to help you remember is that decreases are worked in SETS and the Dec Row + [The Number of Rows Indicated - 1] = a SET of decreases. So, continuing with our examples above, Dec Row + [10-1=9] = 10 rows total for a set.
In each of the examples above, 3 decrease rows are worked and there are 9 rows worked even between them. Here's how it looks all written out based on the examples above:
3 decreases have been worked over the correct number of rows (the number of rows is important for the length of the section based on row gauge). 10 rows for each set.
Now, here's the great part - because we know that the decreases are worked in sets (and we know how many rows are in each set), there aren't any hard and fast rules on WHERE in the set you have to place your decrease row. If you prefer it to be the last row of the set worked, then go for it. If you want it in the middle of the set, put it there. There aren't any detrimental effects to the taper or slope in this particular situation.
PS - This is the exact same way increase sets are worked, too.

Simsbury Debut
The Winter issue of Twist Collective made it's appearance this week and I am honored to be a part of such a beautiful collection with my piece, SIMSBURY -
Each design in the issue begs to be knit and is easily styled for the Winter wardrobe. I am particularly drawn to Fiona Ellis' Granville and Glenna C's Burrard, with their stunning use of cables and comfort. Faina Goberstein's Astra, Julia Trice's Esme, and Amy Miller's Dressage are enchanting, too! The models and photography (thanks, you guys!) are stunning throughout every page. You will not be disappointed one bit!
Simsbury came about because I wanted a sweater that would be perfect for layering, something simple yet with beautiful details that draw the eye. It had to be perfect for curling up in front of the winter fire (sipping cocoa, immersed in a page-turning book) or for showing off with cute jeans at the ice skating rink with the beau. I'm pretty sure I achieved that in this piece.
The design features a plunging v-neck that showcases itself really well, but would highlight layered pieces beneath. The main body and sleeves are worked in Stockinette stitch, for a faster workup, but it is the hem, cuffs, and pockets that are the real heroes - delicate, yet firm, the twisted stitch and eyelets draw the eye in.
When I swatched for Simsbury, I quickly discovered that the yarn needed a good twist to uphold the integrity of the twisted stitches, yet stand well on its own in Stockinette stitch. In addition, a subtle vintage coloring (where the color softly fades in and out) would really make the lace pop.
When Glory Days yarn arrived in the mail from Briar Rose Fibers, I was awed by the HUGE skeins of luxury that filled the box. 500 yards skeins of fluffy yarn nearly made me want to swim naked in it (i did not, but a girl can dream!)... The results were amazing; beautiful texture, comfort, wearability, but most important, a fun project for any level of knitter.
I truly love this Simsbury and I hope you do, too - now hop over and check the whole issue out.
PS. Thanks to Twist Collective and Jane Heller for the use of the photographs. Remember not "borrow" the images from my blog, as they are copyrighted.

A day late, but....
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
My girls decided to both dress as Merida, the Brave princess, and they were sooooo stinking cute with their crazy red-haired wigs. I thought I would share a few of the pictures today. :)
Did you go trick or treating with kids? Steal their candy last night? Or were you handing out fun things to the costumed munchkins at your door?

Continuing the Conversation
In an effort to be more at your beck and call, I've put together a Ravelry Group (Tabetha Hedrick, Knitwear Design)! There, you can ask questions to your heart's content, participate in fun conversations, join in on a KAL (keep a look out - I'll be hosting one after the holidays), AND giving you plenty of chances to win free stuff (and who doesn't want THAT?!).
For example, I have a scrumptious skein of Mountain Colors Bearfoot Yarn that is eager for a new home. But, she made me promise not to give her away until the group reached 100 members. I'm also going to throw a free copy of one of my individual patterns, winner's choice! So, head on over, join the group, and comment on the 100 member thread to be entered to win!

Anderson
Janel Laidman and the rest of the crew outdid themselves with their premier online magazine, The Sock Report. I mean truly, I haven't seen such a stunning collection in one place in a long time! And then, I heard about the magazine's sister issue, Skein Theory, and was invited to submit a design for it's debut, which happened this week! Again, I am blown away by the beautiful photography, stunning pieces from outstanding designers, and a comprehensive, well-thought-out layout. There's even a FANTASTIC zipper tutorial in the first issue. So, what are you still sitting here for? Go check it... oh, wait, first I want to tell you about my own design in the magazine!
Presenting ANDERSON .......
The yarn, graciously provided by Sweet Georgia Yarns, was divine. Smooth, tight twist. No splitting. And a fabulous warmth that makes the finished piece so comfortable.
Anderson offers 7 different sizes and is worked in a worsted weight yarn for quick knit (while also making it perfect for the Fall season). Feel free to hop on over to Skein Theory Magazine to purchase your copy today for $6.50. Or, while you are at it, buy the whole pattern collection for only $16. Or better yet, for only $24, you can get the entire digital collection AND the print booklet version when it comes out!
Somehow, though, I bet you want to win your own copy of the digital collection PDF, don't you? How'd I EVER guess?!

The design came about after seeing some lovely angled pieces on the runway. I wanted something that was loose and comfortable, but interesting in the workup. I had wished for a deeper apex underneath the buttons, but in order to make the sizing accessible to as many sizes as possible while maintaining the same esthetic across the board, I had to sacrifice a bit of the depth. I love the final result, though, and hope you do, too!!

Pushing Through
First, congratulations to Cynthia for winning the book, "Pheobe's Birthday," by Joanna Johnson! :)
For the past month, I have been the true epitome of "insanity" as I scramble to write about 16 patterns for two "secret projects." The stress of meeting the deadlines for these has been a bit overwhelming, resulting in a sad loss of "inspiration." The thought of sketching or swatching have left me a bit "meh."
But, I am thrilled that at this very moment, I am on the LAST ONE and can now focus on other projects that were pushed to the back burner. Like,

But, I am thrilled that at this very moment, I am on the LAST ONE and can now focus on other projects that were pushed to the back burner. Like,
- the baby blanket for my, now, 4-month old niece Eva.
- Sweaters for my own kiddos (they've been begging every day).
- exploring a new shawl design to release (I have this AMAZING yarn from Western Sky Knits that is demanding to become something beautiful, yet simple).
- finishing my first sock book.

Phoebe's Birthday by Joanna Johnson
As the mom of two little girls, I am always on the lookout for great kid books and I ADORE our newest one. "Phoebe's Birthday" is a charming story written by Joanna Johnson, the second in her Phoebe books, and illustrated by her husband Eric.
Phoebe is turning 6 and gets to go to the seaside with her family to spend time with Grandma and Grandpa. She explores the beach, practices swimming, and visits the yarn store - quite a lot for a special 6th birthday! My daughter, Ayla, loves reading her copy, delighting in the soft colors and sweet pictures. Not to mention that she is begging me to knit the charming patterns at the back of the book.
Joanna's knitting designs at the back of the book, Pheobe's Sun Romper, Sun Tunic, Party Dress, and Head Wrap are beautiful, with clearly written instructions and a wonderful girly appeal. She even includes a toy sewing pattern and a quilt pattern!
You and your child will NOT be disappointed in this book. In fact, why don't you enter to win a FREE copy signed by the author!

Marietta Stole
I am so excited to announce the release of a new design, published in collaboration with Sweet Georgia Yarns - Marietta Stole made her debut today!
Marietta Stole
Something lovely and soft, silky and lacy… that’s the Marietta.
Deceptively easy, with eyelets and decreases flowing into a cable-like
pattern, this piece is an absolute must for dressing up or winding down. The same was knit in Sweet Georgia's CashSilk Lace, which is a delicious yarn that flows so delicately and beautifully across the needles. As usual, I have included both charted and written instructions to accommodate all levels of knitters.
I am also thrilled about the photography! You've gotta give me a hand for that - I definitely think my style is becoming clear and my skills improving, don't you? It helps to have a stunning model (thanks, Amy!!).
Ok, back to the pattern. Here's the knitty gritty....

Better Days
I have certainly had better days. In fact, I have had better months.
Much of my blog posts (and my next giveaway) have been delayed because I've been playing catch up. Here's the lowdown:
It began here: Vandals stole copper piping to the irrigation system outside our basement window (we live in a townhome complex) resulting a mini geyser that erupted for hours. It was about 5:30 in the morning, when I was kept hearing water running... struggling to NOT wake up that early, I poked the husband and said, "Is it raining? I hear water running..."
"hmmm? It's just the waterfall."
"Babe, no, wake up. I hear water running!"
The husband bounces up, runs to the basement, and drops the F-bomb. The geyser from the irrigation system filled our basement floor with about 2 inches of water across the span. Oy vey. Needless to say, I spent several days on the phone with the restoration company, the HOA Management company, my landlord, and all the neighbors who wanted to the scoop, on top of cleaning and trying to put things back together. The damage was minimal to physical things, but not to my mental outlook - I had paranoid delusions of the vandals coming back and doing the same thing for several nights, causing me to wake with a start at 2am.The vandalism also resulted in our water being turned off for 14 hours, so I took myself out to lunch at Red Robin's so I could use the bathroom. :)
The day after the Great Basement Flood of 2012, my husband came down with a nasty cold that made him pretty useless. Still loveable, but useless.
The day after husband got sick, the A/C stopped working. It was 98 degrees outside for 3 days. On a holiday weekend (Labor Day). Cue 2 more days of phone calls to landlord and A/C company.
Shortly after, my computer crashed and had to be formatted. I an entire day making sure everything was backed up before taking it to my fabulous computer guy, Matthew over at Average Joe Computer Services, to receive the dreaded treatment. I then spent two entire days re-installing all of my software and restoring all of my data and documents.
The moral of the story? To forgive someone who seems slow on the uptake. There is a good reason for it.
The good news? I am FINALLY caught up as of today (on emails, work, pattern writing, everything!)! Tune back in on Monday for a wonderful giveaway.

Introducing the September Cowl
I'm thrilled to introduce a new design for you guys! With Fall just around the corner, you need a sophisticated, pretty, and SIMPLE cowl design for your knitwear wardrobe. September answers each of those needs.

I had originally envisioned the piece knit with a bulky yarn, but after swatching for a bit, I discovered that the lighter DK weight gave it a much lighter feel and was gentler on the body.
Flecked with easy cables for a lovely texture and beautiful style, this cowl is suitable for just about all types of yarn. Because it is worked in the round, it is quick to knit! The pattern includes both charted and written instructions, so there isn't any guessing - a great beginner introduction to cables, yet fun enough for the intermediate knitter.

The Buzz about Halos of Hope
| Who will you SAVE or SHAVE? |
| Pam Haschke, Founder, Halos of Hope |
Many of you know that these efforts to assist cancer patients hold a dear place in my heart - cancer reaches all of us, without question. I've had family members battle cancer, some who have won and a few who have lost, and each notice is like a wound to the heart. My own sister runs the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's marathon every year, raising funds for the treatment of blood cancers. And I've watched a dear friend, perhaps one of the strongest women I will every come to know, shave her own head in a show of solidarity for her 2 year old daughter battling Leukemia (fyi: that sweet girl is now 6 years old and cancer FREE!). In fact, if you want to get down to the knitty gritty, an estimated 1.6 MILLION new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed THIS YEAR (and that estimate doesn't even include minor, non-invasive cancers). The point, my dear friends, is that someone you know is going to need support, love, encouragement, and strength to fight, even in the smallest of ways. And we can certainly make a step, however simple, in that direction.
XRX and Halos of Hope are partnering up for a fun, yet increasingly important fundraiser called the 'The Great Halos of Hope Buzz.' (that's a mouthful, I know). Benjamin Levisay of XRX, Mark Moraca of Kollage Yarns, and Drew Emborsky of Crochet Dude are ready to get shaved - for only $10 a vote, will you choose to save them or shave them? {I'm voting to SHAVE Mark! Haha!}
Go vote, share, re-post - you have until Oct 13th! Your help will ensure that many, MANY more hats go out to people who need them. And they will need them. You have my personal thanks for all you do in the cancer battle.

I had the great pleasure of designing two pieces for Kollage Yarns' Fall pattern lineup! Buy, knit, and enjoy!
What is even more awesome about Kollage is that their square needle products are now 100% American made! I was given the chance to try out their needles at TNNA and I am super impressed.
Kollage is the inventor of the square knitting needle and are constantly seeking to improve the experience for us crafters. These needles have a beautiful pewter-like finish, fantastic points that are perfect for lace, and a nice smooth join (very smooth, actually) between the needle and cable. They do tend to cause tighter stitches, so you might explore using a needle size larger than you are used to. I encourage you to talk to your yarn store for a demo!
Stunning cables, rich texture, and a pattern written for two yarn weights result in a project that you'll want to knit again and again. I, personally, love this design and hope you do, too.
Don't be intimidated by the use of fingering-weight yarn in this sweater. It results in a delightfully light piece that is perfect for those warmer early Fall days. Beautiful cables and eyelets panel up the front, while simple shaping and quick sleeves create a sophisticated fit.

June TNNA and Giveaways!
It has taken nearly a week for me to recover from 'The National Needleworks Association" (TNNA) June trade show and for good reason! Parties, fashion shows, meetings, lunches with friends, walking the floor - it sure takes a lot of energy. Here's my own little re-cap of the show (followed by a giveaway, so keep reading!)...
Jill Wright and I always travel to the show together because she's the best travel buddy I know! We arrived Friday, late afternoon, and after a ridiculously long wait for baggage, we hustled over to our hotel, dressed in our fancy clothes and masks (Jill rocked it, by the way), and bustled on to the Yarn Thing's Masquerade Designer Dinner, a fabulous event hosted by the infamous Marly Bird.
I can't even begin to list the number of people I got to chat with, but it was a fun evening meeting new people (and the food was YUM!). Marly and the sponsors loaded us up with FABULOUS goodie bags and swag! I will be testing and commenting on the goodies, so look for blog posts on those soon.
Saturday, the show floor opened with just enough time for me to get to the fashion show! Sweet Georgia Yarns and I collaborated together on three pieces for the Fall lineup, all of which debuted in the show. I think they were quite well received, even with the stunning model being slightly "too" model-ly for the size of the sweater. Haha! Here's a sneak peek...
Shortly after the show, I was lucky to join some wonderful ladies for lunch: Jill, Sarah Wilson (yes, the famous Sexy Knitter!), Laura Lough, Corrina Ferguson, and Lee Meredith. I think we spent half the day chatting and goofing off.
The remainder of the day involved meetings with various companies, discussing designs and projects for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2013 season. Needless to say, my planner is jam-packed with work and I am officially desperate for school to re-start so the kids can be out of the way. Wink.
Saturday evening, I grabbed a cab with the amazing Sandi Rosner, Marly Bird, and Jill to head out for the Craftsy shin-dig over at Mouton. They treated us to cocktails and fancy snacks. Next, it was across the street to a cute little cafe (and I can't think of the name!) for dinner, joined by THE Shannon Okey, as well as Jill, Marly, Laura Lough, and Mikey & Daniel. That crowd SERIOUSLY had me laughing so hard that my throat was raw the next morning.
Sunday = MORE meetings, more work for the calendar, more walking the floor, more petting the amazing yarns for the year. Seriously, my friends, you are going to love the yarnie goodness coming out. Some of my favorite highlights were: Kollage Yarns' American-made square needles, the new Sock Report Magazine (what a stunning collection!), Sweet Georgia's Superwash DK and Cashsilk Lace, Shibui's Cima, Debbie Bliss' Paloma, Juniper Moon Farm Sabine, and ... gosh... there's just too much deliciousness to list!
Jill and I decided we were beat, so we ordered pizza in and spent the night with her teaching me how to crochet. It was lovely, but don't look for any crochet designs from me any time in the near future. Haha!
On Monday, I finished up with a few more appts, gratefully accepted swatching yarn from the amazing companies that I will be collaborating with this year, and then joined Marly, Marly's Mom (whom I affectionately call MM), and Jill for lunch. For dessert, I FINALLY got to enjoy some Jeni's Ice Cream (salted caramel in a cone) - DUDE!!! Where has it been all my life!? I was depressed not to be able to take some home to the hubs.
Then a cab, then a plane, and then home. Whew.
So. You read all of that, I am sure. And now you want your prize. Right? The giveaway is for a TNNA Swag-Bag of your own containing goodies such as HiKoo yarn, Patons yarn, an audio book from Random House Publishing, Knitter's Pride circular needles, Susy Bates, Circular Needles, a Namaste Skinny Mini, Craftsy Stickers. And all packed in to a Namaste re-useable grocery-style bag. WOOT!
So, I'll host two drawings for two winners! Just leave a comment below describing your favorite yarn-related product! And if you share this blog post on Facebook (post a comment to let me know you did) and you will be entered TWICE! Have at it! The giveaway ends at 11:59pm on Friday, July 6th. Winners will be contacted via email for their shipping address.
